The SDSMF sponsored the Kick for a Cure Soccer Tournament & Festival which benefits children with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) on June 17 & 18, 2011 at Westview High School in San Diego. The SDSMF provided three certified athletic trainers for both days to monitor treat the tournament participants. Ages of players ranged from 8 to 60 with over 40 teams playing in the tournament.

The Executive Director had this to say about the volunteer athletic trainers,
“Your Trainers were the consummate professionals. They compassionately cared for everything ranging from the minor injuries, such little bruised knees, to responding swiftly to one player who broke her arm. The parent of that child was very impressed and grateful for the care that Jesse provided – and they wanted him to know that. Their child was taken to Children’s and when she woke up from being sedated, she asked where he was, because she felt he really looked out for her.

While all the ATCs were each lovely, what was particularly memorable to me is when my little friend Elijah (who is 10 and has  Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, for which our tournament raises money) had cut his knees. We went over to Hugo who treated him with the utmost care, being very delicate and taking the injury very serious.Elijah was set for the rest of the day, and kept asking whether we could go back and get new band aids.  I am very pleased with your services and I truly hope that you can join us again next year!"   ~ Helena Jayasuriya, Executive Director, Kick for a Cure
